1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-024
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-024 under Universal Variety Code UVC-1101 and Die Marker Reference DMR-032, this 1962 Jefferson nickel doubled die reverse exhibits a strong spread on AMERICA with lighter spread on PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF. The emphasis on AMERICA as the strongest area of doubling provides the primary pickup point for this variety. Three die states have been documented: Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed; Stage B shows a light die gouge on the rim under the R of AMERICA at mid die state, with the obverse also at mid die state; Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. The 1962 Jefferson nickel was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.2 mm diameter, as part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. Felix Schlag won a public design competition to create the Jefferson nickel in 1938, and his reverse depiction of Monticello became one of the most recognized coin designs in American circulation. The strong spread on AMERICA lettering is characteristic of doubling that occurred during the hub-to-die transfer process, where multiple impressions were needed to fully sink the design into the working die. The DDR-024 designation indicates extensive variety research on the 1962 date, and the VarietyVista catalog provides die stage documentation that helps collectors identify specimens and understand the chronological progression of die deterioration on this particular die.
