1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-022
Error
Description
Targeting two reverse inscription groups, this 1962 Jefferson Nickel DDR-022 shows light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA. Die markers include UVC-1099 and DMR-030. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state; Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed early die state at Stage A offers the clearest view of the light spread before die wear diminishes the doubling's visibility. Light spread on reverse inscriptions requires careful comparison against a known normal strike, as the subtle extra thickness can be confused with die deterioration doubling — a mechanical byproduct of die wear rather than a hub doubling event. The 1962 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel was produced during a period of high demand that would culminate in the mid-1960s coin shortage, and the volume of dies consumed increased the likelihood of doubled die varieties entering production undetected. DDR-022's high DMR sequence number reflects the extensive cataloging of Jefferson Nickel varieties.
