1962 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Recognized as a "Best Of" nickel doubled die variety, the 1962 Jefferson nickel WDDR-003 delivers very strong Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) spreading toward the center, visible without magnification on well-struck examples. The doubling encompasses UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, MONTICELLO, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with intensity decreasing from left to right — the characteristic gradient of Class II distortion doubling. Cross-referenced as CONECA 15-R-II-C, this variety carries dual attribution recognition. The obverse is itself a doubled die (1962 5¢ WDDO-009), making both sides attributable — an uncommon and desirable configuration. Reverse die markers: two short, parallel, nearly vertical die scratches to the right of the bottom of the M in UNUM, and a slightly slanted die scratch just over the right porch of Monticello. Felix Schlag's architectural reverse, in service since 1938, is especially productive for Class II doubling on building outlines and lettering. Collectors should identify the left-to-right doubling gradient first, then confirm with the CONECA cross-reference and die markers near UNUM and the right porch.
