1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
The stronger of two closely related reverse doubled dies on the 1962 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, DDR-002 shows medium spread on FIVE CENTS and carries die markers UVC-1080 and DMR-011. While DDR-003 for the same date exhibits only light spread on the denomination, DDR-002's medium classification indicates more pronounced letter separation detectable at lower magnification. This distinction matters for cherry-pickers: medium spread can sometimes be spotted during rapid sorting, whereas light spread demands deliberate examination. Both DDR-002 and DDR-003 affect FIVE CENTS but originate from different working dies, each with unique markers. The sequential numbering — UVC-1080/DMR-011 for DDR-002 versus UVC-1081/DMR-012 for DDR-003 — suggests these dies were documented in close succession. The 1962 Philadelphia nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) without a mintmark. Collectors sorting quantities of 1962 nickels should check FIVE CENTS on every example, as DDR-002's medium spread makes it one of the more findable varieties.
