1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Designated DDR-001 for the 1962 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, this doubled die reverse presents a medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and PLURIBUS UNUM, with additional doubling on the last O of MONTICELLO and the right side of the building facade. The spread increases in intensity from left to right, indicating a directional hub displacement vector that produced progressively greater separation on elements positioned further along the affected axis. The building detail on the right side of Monticello — Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate — shows the architectural doubling that gives this variety visual interest beyond simple letter spread. Die markers UVC-1079 and DMR-010 provide independent confirmation of the working die. Felix Schlag's obverse portrait of Jefferson pairs with his Monticello reverse on this 75% copper, 25% nickel coin weighing 5.0 grams. The 1962 Philadelphia issue carries no mintmark, as was standard for the mother mint prior to the 1979-onward P mintmark policy. The medium-intensity spread on the reverse inscriptions and the right-side building detail offer multiple diagnostic checkpoints under moderate magnification.
