Description

Showing a directional gradient in its doubling, VDDR-004 for the 1962 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel displays light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, and LO of MONTICELLO that increases from left to right across the affected inscriptions. This strengthening displacement as the design moves rightward helps distinguish this variety from other 1962-D doubled die reverses where spread may be uniform or concentrate differently. Cataloged by VarietyVista with pending die marker codes UVC-???? and DMR-00? (codes awaiting final assignment), the variety tracks across three die states: Stage A with the reverse in early die state and the obverse in mid-die-state, Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The mismatched die states at Stage A — reverse earlier than obverse — suggest this reverse die was paired with an obverse already in service. Denver Mint Jefferson Nickels from 1962 were produced in substantial quantities, and the doubling on MONTICELLO and the reverse legend provides multiple inspection points for attribution. Collectors should verify the left-to-right increase in spread intensity across the affected elements.
