1962-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
First cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1962-D Jefferson Nickel, this variety displays Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST with the doubling decreasing in intensity from left to right. Very strong doubling gives this entry the visual impact necessary for detection without extreme magnification, as the extra thickness on the motto letters is pronounced enough to catch the eye of experienced cherry-pickers searching Denver Mint rolls. The left-to-right decrease pattern is characteristic of distorted hub doubling where one side of the hub deformed more than the other during the die-making process, creating a graduated effect across the design. Die markers include a die scratch above the O of GOD and a die scratch above the W of WE, both providing fixed reference points for attribution. Discovered by Whaden Curtis. Wexler Variety ID: 1962-D WDDO-001. Denver Mint production on standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. Felix Schlag's portrait of Jefferson and the Monticello reverse were entering their twenty-fifth year of service in 1962.
