1962-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Formerly listed as WDDR-009 before being renumbered, this variety replaces the original WDDR-005 listing, which was delisted because the doubling was too minor. Now designated WDDR-005 for the 1962 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, it documents Class II distorted hub doubling on STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right. The progressive increase in magnitude is characteristic of angular hub misalignment, where displacement grows with distance from the tilt axis, making rightmost letters exhibit the strongest secondary impressions. Obverse die markers include a die scratch below Jefferson's chin. On the reverse, die scratches appear below ES of STATES and CA of AMERICA, with additional scratches below E and the first L of MONTICELLO. The renumbering history illustrates how the Wexler catalog evolves as attributors reassess the significance and relationships of documented varieties, sometimes consolidating or reordering entries. Collectors should examine STATES OF AMERICA for the left-to-right progressive spread and verify the die scratch below Jefferson's chin on the obverse.
