Description

Two different doubling intensities distinguish DDR-003 of the 1962-D Jefferson Nickel: medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right, paired with light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The disparity in intensity between the denomination legend and the motto indicates that these two text areas occupied different positions relative to the hub's pivot point — UNITED STATES OF AMERICA received more displacement while E PLURIBUS UNUM, closer to the pivot, received less. Die markers UVC-1133 and DMR-004 provide the secondary identification diagnostics. Three documented DDR varieties for this enormous-mintage date seems modest relative to the production volume, suggesting either that 1962-D dies were prepared with better consistency or that the census is simply incomplete — there may be additional varieties awaiting discovery in the vast population of surviving 1962-D nickels.
