Description

Two different doubling intensities distinguish DDR-003 of the 1962-D Jefferson Nickel: medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right, paired with light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The disparity in intensity between the denomination legend and the motto indicates that these two text areas occupied different positions relative to the hub's pivot point — UNITED STATES OF AMERICA received more displacement while E PLURIBUS UNUM, closer to the pivot, received less. Denver struck an extraordinary 280.2 million nickels in 1962, one of the highest production figures in the Jefferson Nickel series, driven by the escalating coin shortage that would ultimately lead to the elimination of silver from circulating coinage in 1965. Die markers UVC-1133 and DMR-004 provide the secondary identification diagnostics. Three documented DDR varieties for this enormous-mintage date seems modest relative to the production volume, suggesting either that 1962-D dies were prepared with better consistency or that the census is simply incomplete — there may be additional varieties awaiting discovery in the vast population of surviving 1962-D nickels. Medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA should be detectable with standard magnification, making this the diagnostic starting point, while the light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM requires more careful examination to confirm.
