Description

Classified as carrying a strong spread towards the center, the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-021 stands apart from the many close and very close entries that dominate the 1961 DDR population. The Class II distorted hub doubling affects the designer's initials FG, ONE CENT, USA, and slightly E PLURIBUS UNUM, spanning four inscription areas plus the national motto and thereby covering a substantial portion of the reverse design. Such breadth indicates a relatively pronounced misregistration between successive hub impressions during the die's manufacture at the Philadelphia Mint. No significant obverse markers have been recorded, but the reverse carries a short vertical die gouge above the left side of the second T in STATES — a confirmation point situated well away from the primary doubling zones and thus unlikely to be confused with the doubled design elements themselves.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: None significant. Reverse: A short vertical die gouge can be found above the left side of the second T in STATES.
