Documented by VarietyVista, this 1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar holds the 19th DDO catalog position for the date, confirming an exceptional concentration of hub doubling events during proof die production. Hub doubling results from misalignment between the hub and working die during the multi-impression hubbing process required to fully transfer design details. Die markers UVC-282 / DMR-032 track three stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). Designed by John R. Sinnock, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm. The concentration of nearly twenty DDO varieties for a single proof year suggests systemic alignment issues in the hub-to-die transfer process that affected multiple working dies, rather than isolated incidents on individual dies.
