1961 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar carries the 11th cataloged doubled die obverse for the date, part of a remarkably large DDO population for a single proof year. The doubled die effect was created during the multi-impression hubbing process when the hub and die failed to align precisely between impressions. Die markers UVC-174 / DMR-022 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). Designed by John R. Sinnock, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm. The Franklin Half Dollar series ran from 1948 through 1963 before being replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar, and the 1961 proof issue produced a substantial DDO population that continues to attract variety collectors examining proof sets from this era.
