Description

Improper annealing nickels — commonly known as Black Beauties — result from overheating during the annealing stage of planchet preparation. When nickel-clad planchets are exposed to excessive heat, copper from the core migrates to the surface, producing a darkened appearance that can resemble environmental damage but is distinguished by the presence of full mint luster and sharp strike detail. The discoloration is a Mint production artifact, not post-strike chemical exposure. Black Beauties appear most frequently on 1958 and 1959 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickels, where the phenomenon is most concentrated in the series, but examples are found across other late 1950s and early 1960s dates including this 1961 issue. The rarity of this 1961 example is classified as fairly common within the improper annealing population for the date. Collectors should prioritize examples with full cartwheel luster and sharp design definition, as these confirm a planchet preparation origin rather than post-strike alteration. The contrast between darkened surfaces and preserved mint luster is the key authentication point.
