1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Spanning an unusually wide range of reverse elements, DDR-006 on the 1961 Philadelphia Washington Quarter shows light spread on QUARTER DOLLAR, split stem ends, the left tail feathers, leaves, the eagle's wing, and RICA of AMERICA. Timothy Wissert reported this variety. The breadth of affected features — from denomination inscription through botanical details to the eagle's plumage and partial legend — suggests hub displacement impacting a large swath of John Flanagan's reverse at low but broadly distributed intensity. The split stem ends are a particularly useful diagnostic: light doubling at the olive and laurel stem terminals creates visibly forked tips distinct from normal engraving. The selective involvement of only RICA from AMERICA indicates the displacement crossed the detection threshold only at the rightmost letters. The 1961 Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 6.25 grams, among the last silver quarters before the 1965 composition change. Begin examination at the split stem ends and QUARTER DOLLAR, then progress to the tail feathers and wing for full attribution.
