Description

Distinct from the WDDR-031 cataloged from the same 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel production, the WDDR-042—verified by William Hostutler—extends its Class II Distorted Hub Doubling across both E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED, a broader affected area that differentiates it from the motto-only spread of its catalog sibling. Where WDDR-031 concentrates doubling on the motto alone, WDDR-042 demonstrates that the hub misalignment during the pressing of this particular reverse die reached into the upper legend as well, creating a more expansive signature that experienced researchers can separate from WDDR-031 without relying on die markers alone. Those markers nonetheless provide definitive confirmation: a die scratch appears above the right arch of Monticello, and a die dot is positioned inside the second U of UNUM. No obverse die markers are noted. The two varieties coexisting from the same date and strike type underscores the productive nature of proof Jefferson nickel research in the early 1960s, a period that has yielded a substantial WDDR catalog. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1960 WDDR-042 Proof.
