Description

Attributed by Tony Russo and cross-referenced as CONECA 10-R-II-C(3), this 1960 Jefferson Nickel Proof doubled die reverse is cataloged as 1960 WDDR-038 Proof. Classified as Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling, this variety displays strong tripling on E PLURIBUS UNUM along with nice doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, the LLO of MONTICELLO, and the right side of the Monticello building. The (3) suffix in the CONECA designation confirms the tripling component observed on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Obverse die markers note none observed. On the reverse, a die scratch appears below the small left window of Monticello, and a slanted die scratch is visible inside the upper portion of the small right window. The tripling on E PLURIBUS UNUM indicates three distinct hub impressions registered on this die, creating two layers of secondary design elements alongside the primary impression.
