Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1960 WDDR-035 Proof, this proof-only 1960 Jefferson Nickel displays Class II distorted hub doubling with very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The "very close" designation indicates the two hub impressions nearly overlap, making this a variety that requires careful examination under magnification to confirm. Reverse die markers include a die scratch to the lower right of the small center semicircular window on Monticello's facade and die scratches below the word UNITED. No significant obverse markers were noted. The 1960 proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at Philadelphia, where approximately 1.69 million proof sets were produced that year — a period when proof set sales were climbing rapidly as coin collecting's popularity surged during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Thirty-five documented Wexler doubled die reverses for the proof 1960 nickel is a remarkable count, suggesting that the dies used for this year's proof production exhibited frequent hubbing anomalies. Class II distorted hub doubling typically creates doubling that is difficult to classify as purely directional because the distortion effect varies non-uniformly across the die face, and the Monticello reverse's rich architectural detail — columns, arches, windows, and dome — provides numerous small reference features where even very close spread can be confirmed by experienced variety attributors.
