1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-034

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-II-C(4) and Cherrypickers FS-05-1960-801 (0.36), this proof Jefferson Nickel reverse is designated among the "Best Of" nickel doubled die varieties — a distinction indicating it ranks among the most dramatic and collectible doubled die varieties in the entire Jefferson Nickel series. The variety presents very strong Class II quadrupling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, with additional nice doubling visible on the LLO of MONTICELLO and the right side of the building. Quadrupling — four distinct impressions of the design elements — is exceptionally rare and produces a strikingly layered effect on the affected lettering that is visible even to the unaided eye. Die markers on the reverse include a die gouge on the rim above E and P of E PLURIBUS UNUM and a die gouge between the lower portions of the D of UNITED and the first S of STATES, while no obverse markers have been noted. As a 1960 proof struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm diameter, this coin was produced on polished planchets with mirror fields that dramatically enhance the visibility of the quadrupled inscriptions.
