1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-030

Description

Documented through the research of Brian A. Ribar, the 1960 WDDR-030 is a Class II (Distorted Hub) doubled die reverse on a proof Jefferson nickel showing close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The doubling increases from left to right across both legends, with the effect showing best on UNUM and AMERICA, the rightmost words in each phrase. This left-to-right amplification is a characteristic fingerprint of distorted hub doubling where the hub's maximum flexion point was positioned to the right side during impression. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint for proof sets, the coin is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. No obverse die markers have been noted, but the reverse provides two useful authentication points: a die dot to the upper left of the small left window of Monticello and a small die dot above and between the second and third columns. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1960 WDDR-030 Proof, this variety is part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series.
