Description

Close Class II spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA identifies this 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-029, where hub distortion during die sinking shifted the reverse inscription enough to produce detectable doubling. Class II doubling results from the hub being tilted or deformed rather than rotationally displaced, creating a directional shift distinct from the curved spread path of Class I varieties. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 1960 WDDR-029 Proof, the variety carries distinctive reverse die markers: a slanted die scratch to the lower left of the small left window on the Monticello facade, a die dot above the crossbar of the second L of MONTICELLO, and a die gouge left of the long left window. No obverse markers were noted. The close classification means the secondary image nests tightly against the primary, requiring careful lighting to separate the two impressions on AMERICA's serifs. Twenty-nine cataloged doubled die reverses for the 1960 proof nickel demonstrates the depth of research applied to early proof Jefferson issues, where mirror-field surfaces preserve subtle anomalies that would wear away on circulating coins.
