Description

Struck as a proof issue, the 1960 WDDR-027 Jefferson nickel shows close Class II distorted hub doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread decreasing from left to right across the legend. Class II doubling results from a warped or distorted hub, and the diminishing intensity from left to right indicates the distortion's apex sat nearer the left side of the die, where UNITED bears the strongest secondary image. The directional gradient across the legend serves as a key diagnostic: specimens should show noticeably thicker lettering on UNITED compared to AMERICA.
