1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026
ErrorDescription
Brian A. Ribar attributed WDDR-026 of the 1960 Proof Jefferson nickel, which exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling. Very nice doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, while a much closer spread appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. The diminishing spread from the motto to the peripheral legends is characteristic of the distorted hub mechanism, where slight warping of the hub produces maximum displacement at certain points on the die face. The reverse carries a die gouge through the left small semicircular window and a circular die gouge between the lower portions of the first and second columns extending to the steps of Monticello. Cross-referenced as CONECA 7-R-II and Wexler Variety ID 1960 WDDR-026 Proof, this variety is a well-documented proof doubled die reverse. Proof Jefferson nickels from 1960 were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and doubled die varieties from this era's proof production are actively pursued by specialists.
