1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018
Error
Description
Identified by the appearance of an extra horizontal bar below the L of LIBERTY, WDDO-018 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike presents a distinctive form of hub doubling that is relatively straightforward to detect once a collector knows where to look. The extra bar results from a displaced secondary hub impression creating a shadow element beneath the crossbar of the L. The obverse die is well marked for attribution purposes: a die dent extends southeast from the rim well north of the L in LIBERTY, a long die gouge runs through the upper TRU of TRUST, a die scratch extends southeast from the upper part of Lincoln's nose, and a short die scratch extends south from the front of Lincoln's eyelid. On the reverse, two die scratches run south from under the right bottom of the Memorial to the N of CENT, a die scratch extends northeast from the upper right base of the Memorial to the C of AMERICA, another die scratch extends east-northeast from the right cornice to the C of AMERICA, a die scratch runs north to south in the 10th Memorial bay, and a small die gouge sits inside the upper second S of STATES. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-018 with no other known cross-references, the Small Date attribution distinguishes this listing from the Large Date version that shares the same Wexler number but resides on a different parent hub type.
