Description

Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on this first-cataloged DDR for the 1959 Jefferson Nickel produces a strong spread toward center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with slight extension onto AMERICA intensifying left to right. Class II doubling results from slight hub rotation between impressions, creating displacement varying with distance from the pivot point. Multiple stages exist, with a short diagonal die gouge through the lower right of the first L of MONTICELLO serving as a consistent marker across all stages. No obverse markers noted. The WDDR-001 designation as primary DDR suggests the most prominent doubled die reverse for 1959.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: None noted.
  • Reverse: Several stages exist with a short diagonal die gouge through the lower right of the first L of MONTICELLO visible on all stages.
