1958 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Showing strong spread on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1958 Lincoln wheat cent. Both catalogs give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (22.15), which Wexler writes FS-01-1958-101 (022.15). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a very strong Class I clockwise spread on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, Lincoln's ear, hair details, eyelid and bowtie, and the folds of the vest. On the obverse three parallel scratches run south from the space separating the T and Y of LIBERTY, a short WNW-ESE scratch lies under and between the O and D of GOD, an NNW-SSE scratch lies between the T and R of TRUST, and a short ESE scratch runs from the upper right of the R in TRUST. No reverse markers were noted. Stewart Blay submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I and Breen as #2222. Wexler notes that officials of the U.S. Mint have judged the variety genuine, and points to a detailed history in the Second Edition of The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents, by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn, at page 361. VarietyVista credits W. Marira with the report and Rick Snow with the photos. Under its marker codes UVC-1931 and DMR-003, stage A (early), stage B (middle) and stage C (late) are all unconfirmed.
