1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Assigned Wexler Variety ID 1957 25¢ WDDR-002 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-001, this Philadelphia-struck Washington quarter shows strong doubled die reverse characteristics. Originally listed as WDDR-004 before being renumbered, the variety displays extra thickness on the letters of QUARTER DOLLAR, the letters of EPU, the letters of USA, and the lower leaves and branches. Obverse die markers include die scratches extending northeast from the top of the head below the B of LIBERTY, a short die scratch running southeast from the lower right Y of LIBERTY, and a die crack running west to east at the top of the forehead. On the reverse, a short vertical die gouge sits to the left of the E in QUARTER, a small die gouge appears at the top of the D in DOLLAR, and another rests inside the top of the first U in PLURIBUS. The breadth of affected lettering across QUARTER DOLLAR and the EPU motto makes this one of the more comprehensive doubled die reverses in the 1950s Washington quarter series, where variety collectors focus on silver-composition issues from the final decade before the 1965 clad transition.
