Description

Seventh in the Wexler Team's DDO roster for the penultimate year of wheat cent production, the 1957 WDDO-007 was cataloged as 1957 1¢ WDDO-007 without additional cross-references in the CONECA or Fivaz-Stanton systems. The 1957 Philadelphia cent's mintage of 282.5 million pieces occupied the second-to-last production slot for Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse before the Memorial design transition of 1959. At least ten DDO varieties have been documented for the 1957 date, and WDDO-007 occupies the middle range of this group, positioned between the earlier-discovered varieties and the later additions to the census. The multi-impression hubbing process that generated doubled die varieties continued essentially unchanged through the late 1950s, meaning the same fundamental die preparation technique that produced doubled dies in 1909 was still producing them in 1957 -- nearly half a century of continuous design production that yielded doubled die varieties at irregular intervals throughout. Collectors often approach the wheat cent DDO census chronologically, examining each date in sequence and identifying the documented varieties before moving to the next year. For the 1957 date, WDDO-007 represents a mid-list target that requires careful attribution to distinguish from the six preceding and three following DDO varieties. The specific spread direction, class of doubling, and most prominently affected design elements define each variety's unique identity, and collectors should examine candidate coins with at least 7x magnification, noting which elements of the obverse design show separation, extra thickness, or notching indicative of genuine hub doubling.
