1957 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1957 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's letters, the 7 of the date and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST show a Class II spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A has a clash mark reaching south from the chin's bottom to the bow tie and a scratch joining the upper left and upper right of the 9. On Stage B a WSW-ENE crack runs through the upper hair and a west-east crack through the forehead, and the throat clash has become very weak. On the reverse, Stage A has short gouges jutting left and right of the lower part of PLURIBUS' R; two SSW-NNE scratches between ONE's O and N; and a scratch heading north from the top of CENT's T. On Stage B the gouges are very weak and the scratches gone; new are a heavy crack down the lower right of CENT's T, a scratch running north from the upper left of ONE's N to PLURIBUS' B, and a scratch running SSE from the bottom of CENT's T to the top of STATES' second T. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Crawford lists it as CDDO-001 and Coppercoins as 1957P-1DO-006. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
