1957 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1957 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST show Class VI extra thickness. Obverse Stage A has a die chip in the lower part of LIBERTY's B; two parallel NW-SE scratches above LIBERTY's Y; many SSW-NNE scratches right of the bust; and a crack along the left side of the bust's base, over the designer's initials, which curves out to the rim at its left end. Stage B adds chips in the tops of the date's 9 and 5, a west-east crack through the upper forehead, and a chip near the left end of the crack across the bust's base. On the reverse, Stage A has many N-S scratches through ONE's E and CENT's T. Stage B adds a crack running SSE to the rim at about 4:00, starting from the lower right wheat stalk, and a chip on the lower T of CENT. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-VI and Coppercoins as 1957P-1DO-002. Wexler's comments note that the variety appeared, as 1957 1¢ 1-O-VI, in his 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die, and that earlier stages without the Stage A chip and crack may exist. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
