Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1957 WDDR-024, this Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse displays a combination of Class II and Class VI hub doubling — distorted and distended doubling respectively — creating a complex multi-class variety. A strong Class II and Class VI spread is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with an even stronger tripled spread on AMERICA and a closer spread on CENTS. The tripling on AMERICA indicates this die received at least three separate hub impressions with slightly different alignments, producing overlapping design elements that show three distinct positions rather than the more common two. Obverse die markers include two die gouges positioned above the 1 of the date and a die gouge extending from the left side of the 7, providing reliable attribution diagnostics. On the reverse, a slanted die scratch appears above the first O of MONTICELLO, and another die scratch runs below ICE of MONTICELLO. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, whose original 1938 design featured a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and a front view of Monticello on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, the coin weighs 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter and a plain edge. The 1957 issue falls within the post-war era of high mintage production, yet multi-class doubled dies remain uncommon regardless of overall output. The combination of Class II distortion with Class VI distension creates a variety where both the character and scale of the doubling vary across different areas of the die face, making thorough full-inscription examination rewarding for the attributor.
