1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

1957-D WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's ERTY and the 9 of the date are spread to the south. Obverse Stage A has a scratch heading SW from the 9's bottom; a scratch heading NNE from the top of the 1; and a scratch running south from between LIBERTY's E and R that curves SSW. Stage B adds a chip in the top of the 9; a long scratch running SSW from the back of the head, left of the ear, between LIBERTY's T and Y and on to the rim near 8:00; a long N/S scratch through the left side of LIBERTY's B; and a long scratch heading SW from the lower right of IN's N. On Stage C the Stage A and B scratches are abraded away or very weak, except the long one from the back of the head, and a small gouge appears above the 5. Stage D shows a long scratch heading SW from the lower right of IN's N, between LIBERTY's B and E and out to the rim, and a long scratch heading NNE from the top of LIBERTY's I to IN's I. On the reverse, Stage A has two scratches heading SE from the top right of ONE's E, through the top right of CENT's T, to the tops of STATES' E and S, and a scratch heading SE from the bottom of UNUM's first U to the top right of ONE's E. On Stage B these are much weaker; die clash remnants run from the lower left of ONE's E to the top right of CENT's N, and many NW/SE scratches cross the reverse. By Stage C heavy abrasion of the reverse die has left many SW/NE scratches across it; Stage D is the same as Stage C. James C. Moreland submitted Stages A, C and D, and John A. Wexler Stage B. CONECA lists it as 10-O-IV+VIII and Coppercoins as 1957D-1DO-005. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
