1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

1957-D WDDO-007 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's ERTY is spread to the south. The obverse also has a repunched mint mark, a D/D Tilted (Rotated), which Wexler's RPM files number 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-010. Obverse Stage A has a SW/NE scratch low on the front of the vest and two nearly vertical scratches right of LIBERTY's Y. On Stage B large chips appear in the tops of the date's 9 and 5; Wexler gives Stage C as identical to Stage B. On the reverse, Stage A has parallel scratches running south from PLURIBUS' I; scratches running south from the bottom of AMERICA's C; and a gouge beside the lower right wheat stalk on its left, southeast of AMERICA's second A. On Stage B these are present but weaker, and a crack follows the lower right wheat stalk along its right side. By Stage C that crack reaches out to the rim. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A, James C. Moreland Stage B and John A. Conway Stage C. Coppercoins lists it as 1957D-1DO-004. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
