1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1957-D WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's letters are spread to the north, the 19 of the date slightly to the south, and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST counterclockwise (CCW). The obverse also carries a repunched mint mark, D/D South, which Wexler's RPM files number 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-005. Obverse Stage A has a scratch heading NE from the top of the 1. Stage B adds long parallel SW-NE scratches through LIBERTY's RT and parallel SW-NE scratches right of the lower ear. Stage C adds strong scratches heading SW from the back of the head, along with many other scratches across the obverse. Stage D adds two nearly horizontal cracks, one through the hair at the upper back of the head and one reaching from the hair deep into the upper forehead. Reverse Stage A has a scratch heading SSE from the middle of AMERICA's E, which is weaker on Stage B. Stage C has parallel scratches running SSE from UNITED's N to the O of OF, ending at its upper right, and a horizontal scratch through the tops of STATES' letters. Stage D has a gouge left of the top of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II+V, Coppercoins as 1957D-1DO-002 and Crawford as CDDO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
