1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1957-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's letters and the 19 of the date are spread to the north, while IN GOD WE TRUST and the hair on top of the head are spread toward the center of the die. Obverse Stage A has a short diagonal gouge left of the top of LIBERTY's T; a gouge running alongside the Y's upper left; a short, strong gouge heading NW from the top center of WE's W to the rim; and a scratch heading SW from beneath the top of the 7. Stage B adds a N/S scratch through the 9. Stage C adds a scratch heading NE from the top of LIBERTY's T and strong die pitting through the date and below it, and on the bust's lower right corner. On Stage D the Stage C scratch can no longer be seen, the pitting is very weak, and a chip appears inside the lower part of LIBERTY's B. Stage E adds a gouge heading WNW from the top left of TRUST's R and parallel SW/NE scratches above LIBERTY's Y. Stage F adds a chip inside the top of the 9. By Stage G heavy abrasion of the obverse die has left many SW/NE scratches across the fields. On reverse Stages A, B and C many N-S scratches cover the whole reverse. Stage D adds a strong chip running from the upper left wheat lines of the left wheat ear to the rim. Stage E comes from a new reverse die (the second reverse), with parallel scratches running east to CENT's C from the upper left wheat ear, parallel scratches running east from CENT's T to the upper right wheat ear, and parallel E/W scratches through the tops of AMERICA's CA. Stage F adds a chip on the top left kernel of the left wheat stalk. By Stage G the reverse die, too, is heavily abraded, with many NW/SE scratches across it. John A. Wexler submitted Stages A, B and D, and James C. Moreland Stages C, E, F and G. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II+IV+VIII, Coppercoins as 1957D-1DO-001 and Crawford as CDDO-005. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
