1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Displaying medium hub doubling spread on STATES OF AMERICA, the 1956 Proof Roosevelt Dime DDR-008 provides clear secondary contours on the reverse legend of John R. Sinnock's design. The reverse features a torch flanked by olive and oak branches — symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength — and die markers specific to this working die include a die gouge in the middle of the torch lines, visible in Stage A (early die state). Die markers UVC-286 and DMR-015 identify this variety across three documented stages: Stage A in early die state with the obverse also in early state, Stage B where both reverse and obverse reach mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). As a proof issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint on specially polished planchets with polished dies, the 1956 proof's mirror surfaces make the medium spread on STATES OF AMERICA particularly visible under angled illumination. Struck in 90% silver at 2.50 grams — 1956 falls within the final decade of silver-composition Roosevelt Dimes before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad. Attributed by VarietyVista. Examine STATES OF AMERICA for the medium secondary contours, then locate the die gouge in the middle of the torch lines to confirm die identification and stage.
