1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA characterizes this seventh documented doubled die reverse for the 1956 Roosevelt Silver Dime, recorded by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-285 and DMR-014. The secondary image on the reverse legend is offset from the primary lettering at a medium level — visible under standard magnification without being dramatically separated. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), confirming that specimens exist from early in the die's production life when the surfaces were fresh. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The 1956 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime saw production of approximately 109 million pieces, one of the higher mintages in the silver dime era and a figure that reflects the robust post-war American economy. Seven documented doubled die reverses for a single date indicates active research into this year's output, where the large surviving population provides collectors with ample material to examine. The 1956 date falls in the middle of the silver Roosevelt Dime run, eight years before the composition change to copper-nickel clad. John R. Sinnock's design would continue unchanged through this transition, making the silver issues increasingly desirable as their intrinsic metal value separated them from their clad successors.
