1956 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
The 1956 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005 is a doubled die variety on the Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibiting a medium spread south on Lincoln's eyelid, where the secondary hub impression displaces the eyelid detail downward. This die was produced using the chipped 6 hub — a hub that had developed damage to the numeral 6 in the date, causing a characteristic chip to transfer onto every working die made from it. The chipped 6 serves as both a die-family marker and a tool for researchers tracking which hub produced which working dies during 1956. Die progression data cataloged under UVC-1870 and DMR-007 documents three stages. Stage A at Early Die State and Stage B at Mid Die State remain unconfirmed. Stage C at Late Die State shows extensive deterioration: die cracks in the hair and on the forehead, a die crack running southwest from the bust corner to the rim, die clash marks at the throat and in front of the vest, a die chip on the T of CENT, and a die chip in the lower right wheat grains. This comprehensive Late Die State deterioration provides multiple attribution points for identifying well-worn specimens.
