1956 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-1867 and DMR-004, cross-referenced as FS-101 and identified as a proof, the 1956 Lincoln wheat cent DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002 (written 1956 Pr WDDO-002), shows strong spread on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1956-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong spread toward the center, plus extra thickness, on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse two parallel NW-SE scratches cross the bottom of the 5, and a strong gouge sits beside the bottom of the ear on its right, with another on the collar right of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse a gouge (dot) sits in the gap between the O and F of OF at their tops; a short, strong scratch curves south from beneath the top of the N's diagonal stroke in ONE; X-shaped scratches cross above the gap separating the E and N of CENT; two scratches curve NNE off the C in CENT at its top; and scratches curve NNW off the E and the second T in STATES at their tops. John A. Wexler submitted it. CONECA lists it as PR-2-O-II-C+VI and Coppercoins as 1956P-1DO-004. VarietyVista credits Hugh T. Campbell with the report. Stage A has a semicircular gouge on the rim at the 7 o'clock position, with both sides in an early die state; stage B has both sides middle and stage C both late-middle. Stage D adds a scratch from the nose to the chin, with both sides late. In stage E the nose scratch has worn off and many scratches cross CENT, both sides very late.
