1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-033

Description

Every doubled die obverse in the Wexler catalog represents a unique working die — a physical steel cylinder that received an imperfect hub impression and then went on to strike potentially hundreds of thousands of coins before being retired from service. The doubling on each of those coins is identical in location, direction, and magnitude, because it was created in the die itself rather than during the striking process. WDDO-033 from the 1956-D issue is the thirty-third such working die documented, adding to the extensive record of Denver Mint die production during the final years of the Wheat Cent design. The approaching transition to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959 would bring a new chapter to the series, but the obverse — Brenner's Lincoln portrait, approaching its fiftieth anniversary — would continue unchanged, carrying its hub doubling varieties forward into the new era.
