1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030
Error
Description
Mid-1950s modernization at the Denver Mint included upgrades to press technology and die production infrastructure, changes designed to meet the escalating demand for circulating coinage driven by America's expanding postwar economy. These operational improvements enabled the facility to achieve its record-setting 1956 cent output of over 1.098 billion pieces. WDDO-030 is the thirtieth doubled die obverse variety cataloged for the 1956-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, a milestone number within the Wexler attribution system that underscores how thoroughly this date has been examined. The die sinking process that produces doubled dies was not fundamentally altered by press modernization — the relationship between hub and die blank during transfer remained subject to the same mechanical tolerances — so production increases translated directly into more individual sinking events and, consequently, more opportunities for the positional offsets that create hub doubling. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956-D 1¢ WDDO-030.
