Description

In two short years, the Lincoln Cent would undergo its most dramatic design change since inception. The 1959 introduction of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse would retire Brenner's wheat ear motif after a fifty-year run, making the 1956-D one of the final Denver Mint issues in the original Wheat Cent configuration. Collectors attuned to transitional significance often gravitate toward varieties from these closing years, viewing them as the last expressions of a design era that began when Theodore Roosevelt's coinage beautification initiative brought Brenner's Lincoln portrait to the cent in 1909. WDDO-028 is the twenty-eighth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1956-D, another record of hub misalignment during die manufacture at a facility operating at peak mid-century capacity.
