The hub-to-die transfer process that creates doubled die varieties is a fundamental aspect of United States Mint die production. A hardened master hub bearing the coin's design is pressed into a softened steel die blank under tremendous hydraulic pressure, often requiring multiple impressions to fully sink the design. If the die blank or hub shifts between impressions — even by thousandths of an inch — the resulting working die carries two slightly offset versions of the design, permanently embedded in its face.
