1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
Error
Description
Postwar expansion of the Denver Mint's striking capacity positioned it as the nation's highest-volume production facility by the mid-1950s, a status confirmed by the 1956-D cent's billion-plus mintage. The sheer operational tempo — multiple coining presses running continuously, consuming and replacing working dies at a rapid pace — created a statistical environment highly conducive to die manufacturing variations. WDDO-015 records the fifteenth doubled die obverse identified on the 1956-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, another product of the hub-to-die sinking process where fractional misalignment between successive impressions left permanent doubling on a working die face. Variety collectors examining 1956-D cents benefit from the issue's enormous surviving population; even in higher circulated grades, sufficient examples exist to make cherry-picking a viable pursuit. The Wexler Team's sequential catalog numbering system provides a standardized framework for referencing each distinct variety. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956-D 1¢ WDDO-015.
