1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
Error
Description
With only two years remaining before the Wheat Cent design yielded to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959, the 1956-D cent occupies a late chapter in a half-century numismatic narrative. Collectors drawn to end-of-era pieces find particular satisfaction in varieties from these final Wheat Cent dates, where Brenner's original reverse of stylized wheat stalks was nearing retirement after forty-nine years of continuous service. WDDO-013 adds the thirteenth documented doubled die obverse to the 1956-D catalog, recording another instance where the hub-to-die transfer process produced a working die with overlapping design impressions. The doubling embedded in such a die is permanent — every coin struck from it carries the identical anomaly, distinguishing hub doubling from the strike-to-strike inconsistencies of mechanical doubling. Denver's billion-plus mintage for 1956 ensured that large numbers of these variety coins entered circulation. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956-D 1¢ WDDO-013.
