Description

Penultimate Denver issue of the beloved Wheat Cent series, the 1956-D DDO-007 exhibits a light spread to the south on Lincoln's eyelid — a subtle but diagnostic hub doubling visible under moderate magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista with Unique Variety Code UVC-1886 and Die Marriage Reference DMR-028, this variety features a solid 6 hub characteristic. Stage A represents the Early Die State with concentric circle die scratches providing additional attribution markers, while the Late Die State develops a small die chip on the T of CENT on the reverse. The southward eyelid spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted slightly downward relative to the first, displacing the delicate eyelid contour enough to create a doubled line beneath the original. Eyelid doubling is among the most collected doubled die diagnostics on Lincoln Cents because the eye is a natural focal point of Brenner's portrait. The 1956-D was struck at Denver on bronze planchets at 19mm, one year before the final 1958 Wheat Cent. Examine Lincoln's eyelid for the southward spread, look for concentric die scratches on EDS specimens, and check the T of CENT for a die chip on LDS coins.
