1956-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
The earliest-cataloged of three eyelid doubled dies sharing the 1956-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-003 exhibits strong spread south on Lincoln's eyelid — one of the most recognizable forms of hub doubling on Victor David Brenner's obverse, where misalignment creates a visible secondary eyelid line below the main eyelid contour. What distinguishes DDO-003 from companion varieties DDO-006 and DDO-008 is its confirmed die state profile: specimens are documented in Early Die State with both obverse and reverse showing fresh surfaces, giving collectors the crispest expression of the eyelid doubling before die wear softens the effect. Mid and Late Die State examples remain unconfirmed. The die was prepared using the Solid 6 hub, where the numeral 6 in the date appears filled rather than having an open loop — a hub identification that further narrows attribution. Die markers UVC-1882 and DMR-024 confirm the working die. The 1956-D was struck at the Denver Mint in bronze composition (95% copper). Examine Lincoln's eyelid under 7x magnification for the strong southward secondary line, and verify the solid 6 in the date to confirm the hub variety.
