1955-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Not to be confused with the famous 1955 Philadelphia doubled die, this 1955 San Francisco Mint WDDO-001 Lincoln Wheat Cent features a distinctive doubled die obverse showing two extra eyelids below Lincoln's normal eyelid — a subtle but diagnostically clear form of hub doubling affecting the portrait detail. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch running west-northwest from the top of the head below the D in GOD and a die scratch extending northwest from the back of the head to the left of the lower ear. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs north-northeast from the bottom of the C in CENT and another short scratch runs north-northwest from the top left of the N in UNITED. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1955S-1DO-001 and CONECA 1-O-IV, with full Wexler attribution as 1955-S 1-cent WDDO-001. The 1955-S Wheat Cent was among the final San Francisco cent issues before that mint ceased cent production, making S-mint Wheat Cents from the mid-1950s popular with collectors. Struck in bronze with 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, the eyelid doubling provides a clear focal point for attribution under magnification.
