1955 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

A notable combination variety on the 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-004 pairs a close counterclockwise spread on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST and slightly on the LIB of LIBERTY with a doubled die reverse cataloged separately as WDDR-007 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. The reverse doubling shows strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, and both wheat ears and stems. Obverse die markers include a short horizontal die gouge north of the BE in LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a die scratch running south-southwest from the lower left of the N in UNITED. This dual-die pairing makes WDDO-004 especially appealing to variety collectors, as both the obverse and reverse exhibit independently cataloged doubling on a single coin. The 1955 date further enhances its collectibility given the fame of the 1955 Doubled Die Obverse series, though WDDO-004 should not be confused with the dramatically different and far more valuable WDDO-001.
