1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

1955 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1955 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-002. Both give the Cherrypickers number FS-102 (21.9), which Wexler writes FS-01-1955-102 (021.9). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot at about 4:00, showing on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, the eye, the lower ear, LIBERTY and, slightly, the date. In obverse stage A the doubling is clear and well rounded, and parallel scratches rise NNW off the top of the 9. In stage B the die has been well abraded and is heavily worn, leaving the remaining doubling mushy. Reverse stage A has a scratch from the T of CENT running southeast to the upper right of the E in STATES, scratches running southwest off the right wheat stem's tip, an NNW scratch off the N in UNITED at its top, and a southwest scratch from the upper left of the T in CENT. Stage B pairs the doubled obverse with a new reverse die that shows no significant markers. Jason Cuvelier submitted stage A and John A. Wexler stage B. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II+V, Crawford as CDDO-002, and Coppercoins as 1955P-1DO-002. VarietyVista credits Matthew Munn with the report and describes strong spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the eye, and the lower loops of the 55 in the date. Under its marker codes UVC-1841 and DMR-004, stage A has both sides early, a middle stage B is unconfirmed, and stage C has both sides late.
