Description

While the 1955 Philadelphia doubled die obverse is among the most famous error coins in numismatics, the Denver Mint also produced its own set of doubled die varieties that year — and WDDO-014 is the fourteenth documented for the 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent. A doubled die obverse results from hub misalignment during die production, where successive impressions fail to register precisely, transferring a doubled image into the working die. The 1955-D was struck at Denver in the traditional bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc, carrying Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait alongside the iconic wheat ears reverse. Fourteen DDOs for the 1955-D date reflects the significant die pair volume Denver employed, each carrying the possibility of misalignment during manufacture.
